From Blank Canvas to Backyard Makeover: Seeing the Potential

One of the things I enjoy most about landscape design is helping homeowners see possibilities they may not have considered. Sometimes the biggest challenge isn't building the space. It's helping someone visualize what their backyard can become.

This project started with a relatively open backyard and a blank canvas. This project was completed by the team at Vertigris Midwest, where I've had the opportunity to help homeowners transform outdoor spaces throughout the Kansas City area.

The homeowners wanted a space where family and friends could gather, relax, entertain, and spend more time outdoors. The challenge wasn't finding room for those activities. It was creating a design where they could all work together naturally.

Before the Backyard Makeover

When we first looked at the property, the space had potential, but it lacked purpose. There was plenty of room to work with, yet it wasn't being fully utilized.

Many homeowners find themselves in a similar position. They know they want something more from their outdoor space, but they aren't sure where to begin. Seeing the Potential

Before any construction began, we developed a plan that focused on creating multiple experiences within the same backyard.

The vision included:

• Landscape lighting to extend the use of the space into the evening

• Open areas that still felt connected to the overall design

The goal wasn't simply to add features. It was to create a backyard makeover that felt cohesive, functional, and inviting.

Bringing the Design to Life

One of the most rewarding parts of any project is watching the plan begin to take shape.

Every successful landscape project involves hundreds of decisions along the way. Grading, drainage, materials, elevations, lighting, and circulation all play a role in the final result.

This phase is where ideas become reality.

What I appreciate most about this backyard makeover is that no single feature dominates the space. Each element supports the others, creating an outdoor environment that feels balanced and intentional.

Outdoor Spaces Should Be Used

One principle I come back to regularly is that outdoor spaces should invite people outside.

A well-designed backyard isn't measured by how it looks in photographs. It's measured by how often people use it.

The best projects create opportunities for connection, relaxation, and enjoyment. They become extensions of the home rather than separate destinations.

This project is a great example of what can happen when homeowners are willing to look beyond what exists today and start thinking about what their backyard could become.

Sometimes all it takes is seeing the potential.
